General Musculoskeletal.

General musculoskeletal injuries are the typical injuries and issues that you may imagine a physiotherapist can help with. Musculoskeletal conditions involve those affecting muscles, bones, joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Usually, this injury may stem from a wide array of sources; a sore neck at work, a swollen ankle after weekend sport, an aching shoulder at the gym, to lower back pain you’ve always “just put up with.”

While the majority of musculoskeletal physiotherapy will be rehabilitative, assessment and treatment can also be utilised for injury prevention, whether it be to prevent recurrence of a previous pain or ensure a strong and healthy body for your sport of choice. Similarly, structural assessment and biomechanical analysis can be used to develop and work towards improving sport and exercise performance – this can extend from improving running efficiency and bike set-up in triathlon, to improving technique, muscle balance and exercise programming for weightlifting.

When it comes to musculoskeletal conditions, treatment may include (but is not limited to);

  • Soft tissue release

  • Mobilisation

  • Manipulation

  • Exercise and loading

  • Postural correction

  • Home/Gym exercise programming

  • Home/Workplace environment modification

  • Acupuncture and dry needling

  • Taping or bracing

  • Education

Depending on your specific injury, different modalities will be appropriate; a stiff and aching neck may require to joint mobilisation and postural strengthening, while a painful knee on exercising may require specific exercise and tissue loading. Treatment will almost always incorporate take-away exercises, postural adaptations or environment modification; adherence and continued practice of these are crucial to maximising recovery speed! A combination of treatment both within the clinic and home exercise programming will aim to;

  • Optimise healing

  • Hasten the recovery process

  • Decrease pain and symptoms

  • Restore tissue quality, strength and mobility

  • Prevent recurrence
